ERIC COUVILLION

MEET THE ARTISAN AND MASTER CRAFTSMAN BEHIND LIVE EDGE WOODWORKS IN BREAUX BRIDGE, LOUISIANA

At the heart of Live Edge Woodworks is a passion for the process and the pieces that are born of a sinker cypress tree. There are only a handful of craftsmen who operate a singular production house, from harvesting the wood, cutting the slabs and creating a finished piece of furniture. Each board from each log from each sinker cypress is a different canvas from which he unveils the beauty that lies within.

For over 35 years, Eric Couvillion has pursued his passion of working with live edge sinker cypress. His work--raw slabs to hand-crafted furniture--lives all across the country, and most recently, in the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood, FL.

His exclusive access to felled cypress trees in swamp lands and the rivers of southern Louisiana allows him to harvest logs that have richer depth to their color, ring pattern and shape, which in turn, provides his customers custom furniture more rare and singular than any other artisan could fabricate.

Live Edge Woodworks is different because most of the logs we harvest come from the swamp and can only be reached two months out of the year, when they are not consumed by the rivers of Louisiana. Using heavy construction equipment, in addition to the occasional boat, to unearth the hardwoods, and because we are a custom shop, we only extract up to 10 felled trees a year. This means that at any given time, we have less than 10,000 board feet of lumber from which to create unique designs. And by utilizing the live edge of the sinker cypress, we are able to retain up to 30% more useable board foot of the log.

Plus, our mill has impressive capabilities. We can cut logs up to 24' long and 48" wide, and if you have a request that exceeds those dimensions, our partnerships with other local mills allow us to produce beautiful slabs up to 60" wide.
